APA Basslink Animation and Film
Filming a ship retrofit in Singapore and creating an animation for APA.
About the project
Being one of Australia’s premier energy partners, APA oversees some of the country's largest energy infrastructure resources and their maintenance. While I can’t go into too much detail about what we were filming and why, I can tell you that this project was one of the biggest I’ve worked on.
It involved spending nearly a month in Singapore, working daily in Jurong Port alongside the great team at APA out of a shipping container right on the quay, capturing the retrofitting of a ship to suit the needs APA had for it. The purpose of the filming was threefold. Firstly, to provide evidence that it had happened and worked as intended with the new equipment placed on board. Secondly, to provide a case-study of this sort of work occurring as no ship of that age had had anything done to it like that before. Lastly, to provide training for future generations, as the purpose of the retrofit was likely not to occur until far into the future.
From our perspective, it involved understanding the intricate and often complex workings of the engineering that went behind the retrofit in order for us to be able to capture the most relevant information and translate that into the edit.
Part of the outcome was to create an animation that could serve as an explainer for the work in government and B2B situations.
Often this project required flexibility: in dealing with local port authorities, in handling massive delays that often plague projects such as this, in working in tight quarters amongst stringent safety guidelines and in being away from home for so long.
I can say that this project was one of the highlights of my career. It was such an honour to work with so many amazing people to bring it to life and to provide something that will be useful and essential for Australians (whether they know it or not) for generations to come.
This film was created under the company 50 Kal Communications under Dieter Kahsnitz, which is now operating as Peaks Film Co under Michael Peacock.
