Introduction

Like most global companies, maintaining a consistent culture and expectations across continents can be challenging for BHP. To help address this, BHP engaged us to update their existing corporate induction film, which we originally created in 2019 and had updated over the years.

For this update, the goals were clear:

  • Modernise the existing film to better reflect BHP in 2026, including its evolved workplace culture, technology and spaces.
  • Shorten the film to make it more engaging and relevant.

The audience was new and visiting employees, as well as contractors visiting BHP’s corporate offices globally.

About the film

The film was crafted with storytelling and cinematography in mind, taking a similar approach to airline safety videos. Throughout, real BHP employees demonstrate the changes.

We worked hand in hand with the corporate communications team, from scripting through to delivery.

Our team of three included myself as director of photography, our director with over 20 years of experience, and our producer, who kept the production running smoothly. We filmed in Perth and Melbourne, bringing in local operators—in this case, audio technicians—as needed.

Filming took place over a week, capturing all new dialogue, along with the new scenes and b-roll needed for the update. Together with the BHP team, we produced a five-minute film, down from six minutes and thirty seconds, that accomplished the goals BHP wanted to achieve.

Music composed specifically for the film was one of the elements that took the project to the next level. Combined with footage shot on modern cinema cameras, it helped bring the film into the present day.
